The bracelet That Stayed With Me for 8 Years

Some people come and go in our lives. They bring joy, lessons, or memories, and eventually drift away.

But sometimes, it’s not a person who stays with you — it’s an object. Something small. Something that, for reasons you can’t explain, chooses to remain a silent witness to your life.

For me, that constant companion has been… a handkaapu.

Not gold. Not silver. Not something bought from a jewellery store.
In fact, I didn’t even buy it.

How It All Began

The year was when I was studying at Kalasalingam University. Life was simple yet chaotic — lectures, assignments, hostel food, and the occasional “great escape” into the outside world.

At one point, we — a gang of friends, Bathresh Subramonium, Arun Kumar, Madhan, Ramoshiram, Santhosh, Udhaya Kumar, and Jones Samuel — decided to take a room outside the campus. Mansion/Lodge name was Kaviya Rooms

Kaviya Rooms deserves its own separate article, because it was more than just four walls and a roof. It was a world of golden moments — the laughter, the late-night talks, the struggles, and the occasional silence that comes with low times.

The First Time I Saw It

In first day, while arranging clothes in the shelf of that room, I noticed it — a simple, worn-out handkaapu tucked away in the corner. I don’t know who left it there or how long it had been sitting unnoticed.

Something about it caught my attention. I don’t know why, but I picked it up. And from that day, it became mine — not because I claimed it, but because it somehow decided to stay with me.

Through Highs and Lows

This handkaapu has been with me for over eight years now. It’s been there during my happiest celebrations, when my life felt like it was blooming.
It’s been there during the loneliest nights, when I felt lost or broken.

It doesn’t shine like gold. It doesn’t carry a price tag. But it carries something far more valuable — my memories.

Sometimes, I feel like this handkaapu has absorbed all the energy of my journey — the dreams I had back in my university days, the friendships that shaped me, the heartbreaks, the moments of courage, and the countless little stories that made me who I am today.

Why It Matters

We often think the most important possessions in our lives are the expensive ones. But for me, this simple handkaapu has more value than any luxury item. Because it’s not just an object — it’s a witness to my growth, a silent friend who’s never left my side.

And maybe… just maybe… some things are meant to stay with us forever. Not to remind us of the past, but to silently travel with us into the future.

Next time, I’ll tell you all about Kaviya Rooms — the place where this unexpected friendship with a handkaapu began.

Author’s Note
This story is deeply personal. It isn’t just about a bracelet — it’s about the memories, emotions, and silent promises it carries. I wrote this not to romanticize an object, but to capture how even the simplest things in our lives can hold entire chapters of who we are. If you’ve ever kept something long past its purpose, just because it meant something to your heart, you might find yourself in these words.
